Computerized Tomography (CT or CAT Scans)

Computerized Tomography is a diagnostic test that uses x-rays and a computer to give us detailed pictures of the organs, bones and soft tissues.  These pictures of the inside of your head and body can demonstrate abnormalities that may be causing your symptoms.

The exam will take from 30 minutes to one hour after entering the room depending upon the part of the body being examined.

If you are claustrophobic or have some anxiety, please tell your physician.  He/she may prescribe something mild to relax you before the exam.

Be assured that the machine is open at both ends, well ventilated, well lit and that the technologist can hear and talk with you from the control room by intercom.

The following procedures are performed at Breckinridge Memorial:

Spine:    This exam is to evaluate the  vertebrae and discs.

Bones:    This evaluates the bone or joints for any abnormalities.

Head/Inner Ear/Pituitary/Orbits:    This exam evaluates any abnormalities of the eyes, ears, sinuses or brain.  An injection of x-ray dye is usually given unless there is a known allergy to the dye or idodine.

Abdomen (Gallbladder, Pancreas, Liver, Spleen, Kidneys):     This exam evaluates the abdomen for any abnormalities. An injection of x-ray dye is given unless there is known allergy to dye or iodine.  You will be given several bottles of oral contrast to drink the evening before and the morning of the exam.

Pelvis:    This exam evaluates the pelvis for abnormalities. An injection of x-ray dye is given unless there is a known allergy to the dye or iodine.  You will be given several bottles of oral contrast to drink the evening before and the morning of the exam.
